This is Us

The 1st exhibition at CIC since 2019

The Healing Arts gallery was taken down to be re-painted in 2019. Then came the 2020 pandemic.

We wanted the Gallery back as we knew the joy the space gave to staff and passers-by – a little place to pause:

“I took a patient from Elm B to practice walking by looking at the pictures. The patient was feeling depressed and said the pictures cheered him up. We then talked about them over a cup of tea. Thank you for making the gallery happen!” (2018, response to a staff photography exhibition.)

As the 1st exhibition in 5 years, we wanted to shine a light on the vast range of people who make the Infirmary tick, from those hidden behind the scenes to those on the front line.

Healing Arts photographers, Alex Jakob Whitworth and Narelle Freeman, walked the many wards and departments capturing people during their working day, reflecting the ethos of Healing Arts whereby exhibitions are either by staff or of staff who work at Cumberland Infirmary. The gallery was opened during National Creativity and Wellbeing Week on May 23rd by NCIC Board member, Teresa Griffiths.

With over 6,000 staff working for NCIC and many 100’s in other roles at the Trust’s hospitals, we have many more images to capture! As such, This is Us is a living exhibition where we continue to collect images and interviews of the many brilliant people who work across all hospital sites and share these at the hospitals and on this website.

If you would like to be involved, please contact Healing Arts Project Manager, Susie Tate.
