The gallery space at Cumberland Infirmary was the very first Healing Art’s project, which at that time, was called ‘The Evidence Based Design Group’ – a little bit of a dry name for an arts programme!
In 2018 the gallery space took a new lease of life with its first exhibition being of the work of a member of staff from Elm C, Carrie Calvert.

The feedback was fantastic and heart warming and it gave insight into a member of staff’s world and skills out of the hospital, and it became a place of healing for patients.
We continued to run exhibitions by members of staff, helping patients and families to see another side to the doctor, nurse, administrator, porter, surgeon or other staff they may meet, when in hospital.
The gallery re opened in May 2025 with an exhibition celebrating staff working at the hospital, This is Us.

Be The Artist, 2020
In Autumn 2020, as the first wave of the COVID pandemic had passed, we invited staff ‘To Be The Artist’. Staff were invited to submit their own art work which was exhibited at Florence Arts Centre, Egremont. Images are now up at West Cumberland Hospital and Wigton Community Hospital.
